Diving from Julia

Julia is a customised live aboard catamaran specialising in diving. If you are a keen diver, we can organise a tour of some of the best dive sites in East Africa. These include the great walls and coral gardens around Pemba island, the more remote and unspoilt reefs around Mafia Island and the multitude of marine life around the coast of Zanzibar. We cater for all levels of certified divers and on request we can organise PADI Advanced Open Water Course and speciality courses.

Fully Equipped

Julia is fully equipped with a Bauer "Mariner" dive compressor and eight full sets of Scubapro, Mares and Uwatech dive equipment, including 12L aluminium cylinders, BCDs, regulators, depth gauges, weight-belts and weights. If you want to dive, please let us know your wetsuit and BCD size in advance.

Attractive Pemba Dive Sites

Fundu Gap Area

This is a narrow channel which links a tidal lagoon to the sea. Nutrients from the lagoon provide food for the marine life in the tidal channel and the seaward reefs. One of the dive sites is Manta Point, a pinnacle off the main reef which attracts a large variety of fish life such as anthias, surgeonfish, bluefin and bigeye trevally, shoals of blaack snapper, Napoleon Wrasse and flutefish.

Mesali Island Area

A beautiful uninhabited desert island with an extensive reef system which is a marine reserve. One of the sites is North Reef, a drift dive along a vertical wall covered in tubastrae corals and reef fish. Pelagic Fish like giant trevally and barracuda are often seen.

Ras Miungani

The southern tip of Pemba island which juts out into the main ocean current flowing north along the african coast. There are two dive sites, Emerald Reef which is a coral ridge with prolific reef fish life and the wreck of SS Paraportiani, a steam freighter which ran aground in rough weather on emarald reef and now lies slightly west of the reef. You can easily see the propellor, stern tube, boilers and hold.

Mtangani and Mchengazi

The steep walls with a strong oceanic current are ideal for pelagic life and the diving here focuses on looking for pelagic fish. Sightings of Hammerhead and reef sharks, trevally, tuna and barracuda are common.
